"Paine, in truth, was not an atheist but a deist. He states at the beginning of The Age of Reason: “I believe in one God, and no more.” While it was Paine’s trashing of Christianity in The Age of Reason that made him an outcast, he also made clear in it that “all national institutions of churches, whether Jewish, Christian or Turkish, appear to me no other than human inventions, set up to terrify and enslave mankind, and monopolize power and profit.”
Paine had respect for Jesus (noting that “He was a virtuous and an amiable man”); however, Paine had no respect for Christianity, for which Paine pulled no punches: “Of all the systems of religion that ever were invented, there is none more derogatory to the Almighty, more unedifying to man, more repugnant to reason, and more contradictory in itself, than this thing called Christianity. Too absurd for belief, too impossible to convince, and too inconsistent for practice, it renders the heart torpid, or produces only atheists and fanatics. As an engine of power it serves the purpose of despotism; and as a means of wealth, the avarice of priests; but so far as respects the good of man in general, it leads to nothing here or hereafter.”"
Christianity, like Judaism, teaches One God.
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. ... And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us,
God became flesh. Not a separate God, but the only true God took on flesh for the specific purpose of laying down His human life by pouring His blood unto death.
Jesus claimed to be God, and used God's name for Himself, and claimed to exist as God before Abraham existed in John Chapter 8.
"Most assuredly, I (Jesus) say to you, if anyone keeps My word he shall never see death.”
(What mere man could guarantee such a thing?)
Then the Jews said to Him, “Now we know that You have a demon! Abraham is dead, and the prophets; and You say, ‘If anyone keeps My word he shall never taste death.’ Are You greater than our father Abraham, who is dead? And the prophets are dead. Who do You make Yourself out to be?”
Jesus answered, “If I honor Myself, My honor is nothing. It is My Father who honors Me, of whom you say that He is your God. Yet you have not known Him, but I know Him. And if I say, ‘I do not know Him,’ I shall be a liar like you; but I do know Him and keep His word. Your father Abraham rejoiced to see My day, and he saw it and was glad.”
Then the Jews said to Him, “You are not yet fifty years old, and have You seen Abraham?”
Jesus said to them, “Most assuredly, I say to you, before Abraham was, I AM.”
Then they took up stones to throw at Him..."
(There were only a handful of things for which a Jew could be stoned. In this case they accused Him, God Who took on flesh, of blaspheme, making Himself equal with God, by using God's personal name. Exodus 3:14 "And God said to Moses, “I AM WHO I AM.” And He said, “Thus you shall say to the children of Israel, ‘I AM has sent me to you.’")
So Paine's obvious perjury is that he exalted Jesus saying “He was a virtuous and an amiable man”. How can Jesus be "a virtuous and an amiable man" if He is a bald faced liar, or a lunatic?
But Jesus, having laid aside His divine power (He "emptied Himself"), and having taken on flesh, IS Lord God Almighty, Rev. 1, Heb. 1, John 1; and not a liar nor a lunatic. Paine's analysis of the teaching of the scripture about Christ's dual nature, fully God and fully man, is painfully lacking the truth.
