Both the us and Nazi Germany had camps for their own citizens they wanted to oppress. Stalin had his gulags. The uk firebombing of Dresden and the dropping of atomic bombs on the civilians of Hiroshima and Nagasaki showed anyone can be targeted in a war, even women and children.

And of course the result of the war was the downfall of Eastern Europe into communism.
