called social-democracies for a long time, which is often described as another name for socialism. Until fairly recently, they seem to have functioned fairly well and have generally ranked high on the happiness rankings that come out periodically.
In recent years, something has changed. I would think, for example, mass rapes would tend to lower a countries aggregate happiness. It didn't happen not so long ago, now the authorities try to brush it under the rug and advise Swedish woman to avoid certain areas altogether or to cover themselves modestly if they must go out in certain other areas.
Yes, the welfare state surely is responsible. The damn thing is, they all seemed to do okay with it for ahwile, and then something changes. Fairly recently.
