It was not a remake dippy, it was a homage to those two shows and to 96 yr old Norman Lear. The script was lifted from '73 and the humor was much more clever and sophisticated than a lot of the crap TV that would follow.
I think that Woody did fine and Tomei's version of Stapleton's Edith was dead-on. But it was TV Show, not brain surgery, not international diplomacy, but TV. That you feel compelled to post again about it is pretty telling.
