Wake Forest special assistant Ernie Nestor’s four decades in the business include six seasons as Elon’s head coach, during which he faced Southern Conference rival Wofford 10 times and evaluated the Terriers on video countless others.
It’s Nestor’s applause of Young, not to mention the five Southern Conference championships Wofford has won in the last 10 years, that make me believe Young is a sage choice by Hokies athletic director Whit Babcock.
“His quality of coaching, it’s not to be understated,” Nestor said during a phone interview Monday morning. “He created a style of play that’s both physical, fun to watch and high-scoring. He knows how to get kids to do what he wants them to do.”
“He is not going to be intimidated by anybody,” Nestor said, “because he has played tons of high-level teams and defeated many.”
“When you look at his teams play,” Nestor said, “he’s taking guys and making them much better and getting them to play his style. … He’s not going to be doing backflips on the bench and all that stuff. It will be about the team, not the coach. That’s just who he is.
“He’s been afforded the opportunity at Wofford to develop his coaching style and his playing style, and he’ll be true to that.”
“The cupboard is basically empty right now,” Nestor said, “and he’s going to have to build it, and he’s going to have to build it with his own types of guys. …
“He’s a program-builder, and he’ll do it in the right way. He’ll do it for the love of Virginia Tech. It’s not often you see a guy get the job of his dreams.”
