As you say, it shouldn't take that long. The way college basketball works, turnarounds can be done pretty quickly (see: last season). It only takes a couple players to totally change your program's fate.

Maintaining that level of play is more difficult, depending on how you get there. And there are unexpected things that can hinder progress (see: this season). Those can be excused in context.

Free pass, though? Not at all. A coach needs to show significant signs of progress well before that five-year window closes, and if they haven't made the tournament by then, it's reasonable to doubt he ever will consistently.
