I have studied the never existed story line and I don't think it flies too well.
Though with 40-60 years between death and first tales written down, maybe it is hard to tell. Seems to me that phantasmagorical stories with connected to a charismatic preacher who had lived long ago - who was executed by occupying forces for raising a bit too much of a raucus at the wrong time. And then all this Jewith depth of meaning got attached. Curious thing is that the church begins with any momentum at all with Paul and never with Jesus. It's Paul's religion and Paul's church.
But what a rocking tale they tell.
