optimism because in college you can sometimes be decent by just recruiting well enough and I think they thought his NBA background would draw even better recruits than he did.
The old story never changes, coaching/recruiting is a sliding scale from 0-100. Your recruiter/coaching ratio better fall between 40 and 60.
If you're a 70 coach but a 30 recruiter, you lose.
If you're an 80 recruiter and a 20 coach, you lose.
