against the lesser teams on our schedule, routinely. There were good points and bad points on our non conference results so far.

Losing to teams like UCLA and Washington is no concern, of course. Our only top 50 RPI win so far was a big one, against Arizona St. But we went 0-3 in what I would consider 50/50 toss up games, against decent but not great Oregon, Oregon St, and Louisville teams. Would have preferred we had gone at least 1-2, or 2-1 in those games.

We went 9-2 against the lesser teams on our schedule, just using the initial RPI ranking this week as a line to draw. All those teams have RPIs of 70 and lower, with 7 games against teams at 100 or lower. One could argue that 87 BYU, a loss, was more of a toss up game. They are better than that rank. The only true blemish in this group was the loss to 228 IUPUI, that was awful.

So moving forward with the rest of our non conference schedule, here is who we play, ranked by current RPI:

20 Illinois (2)
41 Oregon (2)
73 Wichita St (2)
74 SEMO (2)
89 Bradley
171 UMKC
202 Pitt (2)

To your point, we need to take care of business and go 8-0 against the teams from Wichita St on down. No question. Those are the types of teams where a W was a given in the past. SEMO, for example, is 22-7, and was able to beat Arkansas, but they are 19-0 against teams with RPIs of 120 and lower, and 3-7 against everyone else. We should swat them aside, though we lost to them last year.

The 4 games against Illinois and Oregon are more 50/50 games. We need to at least split those 4 games. Going 3-1 would be very good. 1-3 would be very disappointing.

Going 10-2 at a minimum in our last scheduled non conference games is what we need. Because we are only 2 games over .500 now, at we will likely finish below .500 in the SEC. hope I’m wrong about that. Maybe we use the huge GA series win as a springboard for the rest of the season. Finishing 10-14 to 12-12 in SEC play would be excellent, IMO. And assure we qualify for the NCAA tournament, if we are allowed to play.
