Here are the first 10 seed lines, top 40 teams, showing what you might anticipate the range of RPI to be, and what it actually was.

1 seeds, 1-4 range. Actual: 1, 2, 3, 8
2 seeds, 5-8 range. Actual: 4, 5, 6, 7
3 seeds, 9-12 range. Actual: 9, 10, 11, 14
4 seeds, 13-16 range. Actual: 16, 17, 19, 24
5 seeds, 17-20 range. Actual: 12, 13, 21, 23
6 seeds: 21-24 range. Actual: 18, 22, 27, 35
7 seeds, 25-28 range. Actual: 26, 28, 29, 30
8 seeds, 29-32 range. Actual: 32, 40, 42, 46
9 seeds, 33-36 range. Actual: 33, 38, 43, 51
10 seeds, 37-40 range. Actual: 20, 25, 48, 50

You can see that RPI rank really did matter for the selection committee and their choice of top 16 national seeds. The one significant anomaly was 24 Oregon State getting a 4 seed, over 12 Marquette and 13 Gonzaga. 5 seeds track pretty well, as do most of the 6 seeds, except for 35 UCLA getting a 6 seed in what should be the 21-24 range. Interesting that in the top 6 seed lines and 24 teams, it is 2 PAC 12 teams that got very favorable seeds, way above where their RPI rank was.

The 7 seeds, Mizzou’s group, track almost exactly into the expected range. So I guess we shouldn’t have been that surprised. But then the 8, 9, and 10 seed lines have more variations. The 10 seed line is really crazy, with the expected range being 37-40 in the country, and the RPI ranks being 12 and 17 below the range minimum and 8 and 10 above the maximum.

Too bad that ESPN was really, really good at projecting the seed lines. Except for us. And Drake. I guess we will find out who the real underseeded team is on Friday.
