I attended one game. Gave up my season tickets 2 years ago.

Why? No one reason. Factors:

- family situation changed; fewer want to go

- lack of team success, 2015, 2016, and early 2017

- buzz killing coach not allowing anyone into practices, so no reporting coming out, 2016, 2017

- increased costs with a worse teams and worse parking/tailgating options, starting in circa 2013; this was a long-time under-pinning for me ... "why pay more and get less?"

- the Purdue home game in 2017 effing near killed me

This is just my story. But overall, my uneducated, non-researched opinion is that factors in overall declines in attendance include (1) aging out of regular, season ticket holding fans, (2) increased costs juxtaposed against reduced salaries overall, and (3) increased ability to see all games at home.

The impact of the student protest in 2015 was zero for me.
