steady growth in the program and not had the step back that we have experienced in year 2.
To explain, let's assign some numbers on a scale of 1-10.
The 2018 Tigers were probably a 6 or a 7...in a reasonable scale, if you make the NCAA, you're at least a 6. We can't be any higher than that because we won 20 games and 20 wins is not the mark of good anymore, it is the mark of decent.
The 2019 Tigers were probably a 4.5-5, and I consider teh 5 because of a couple of atrocious situations like the LSU call and for Mark getting hurt which probably cost us a game.
In 2020, the Tigers should be a 6-7. In the NCAA again, but certainly on the bubble.
Had the Porters not come to MU, we subtract MPJ, JP, and Harris from last year's team. Maybe Robertson, but that's far from certain and we can't predict it. By removing those guys from the equation, Martin recruits 2 or 3 players that are not as good as the Porters, but are probably respectable players. Those guys get minutes as frosh last year and the team is a 4-5.
All of those "alternate" players probably return and play this year, unlike MPJ, JP, and Harris. Having a couple of guys with a little experience to blend with the freshman, as well as an offseason focused on a strategy that was not centered around JP probably makes this year's Tigers a 6 and just in the NCAA. Only 3-4 games won is needed to make that jump.
Then in 2020, we have guys that might not be elite talents, but now have 1-2 years of experience and a team that should be a 7 or maybe better.
So let's summarize.
With Porters
2018 = 6-7
2019 = 4.5-5
2020 = 6
Without Porters
2018 = 4-5
2019 = 6
2020 = 7+
So while nobody can say we should or should not have signed the Porters because it is a matter of personal opinion, it is not really debatable that they set the rebuild back a year and the number of NCAA tournaments in Martin's first 2 years probably remains the same. And without them having come to MU, we'd be in position to make a possible run in the 2020 NCAA versus just hoping to make it.
Personally, I'd rather have:
1. Miss NCAA
2. Barely make NCAA
3. Make a run in NCAA
versus
1. one and done in NCAA
2. Miss NCAA
3. Hope to barely make NCAA
