You could argue that Trump wouldn't have been elected in 2016 if not for Bernie Sanders. He siphoned votes away from Hillary, even in the general election due to the "Bernie or Bust" sentiment of many of his supporters (who thought the DNC rigged the primary and therefore refused to vote for Hillary).
The alt-left socialist movement in the democratic party is the gift that keeps on giving for the GOP.
