Ignoring a lot of other obvious factors and looking only at the freshmen wings. This century, Mizzou has had 6 frosh wings that we can roughly equate to Watson and Pickett.
Watson was ranked #111 and Pickett was a +150 3*
English was ranked 111. Denmon ranked 150. Jimmy Mc was an +150 3*. Gardner was #35. Paulding was #32 RSCI. Gilbert was #62 RSCI.
As freshmen, these 8 players produced these stats.
Player________PPG____3%____2%____RB____Ast____Steals
Gilbert_______4.2____27____51____2.3___1.1____1.2
Paulding______7.0____21____49____2.4___0.9____0.5
McKinney______8.6____33____50____3.8___3.4____0.8
Gardner_______6.1____32____46____2.1___0.9____0.5
English_______6.5____37____40____1.6___1.0____0.5
Denmon________6.0____30____50____2.2___1.4____0.9
Watson________6.1____33____41____1.3___0.5____0.2
Pickett_______8.6____33____43____3.2___1.5____0.8
These numbers do not include tonight's game.
Outside of Gilbert, all of these guys are basically within 1 made basket per game of each other.
Of the 6 former players, 5 of them averaged in double digits as sophomores and Jimmy McKinney was at 9.4 and he probably had the most talented collection of teammates as a soph as anybody. There simply weren't as many opportunities for him that year as many of the other guys had as sophs.
Point being, basically every player we have had in the last 20 years that is roughly comparable to Watson and Pickett as freshmen, have gone on to average double figures as sophomores.
Now, I am not saying that we should expect both of these guys to average in double figures next year, but we should probably expect one of them to do so and it might not be out of the realm of possibility for both to do it. Dru, Mark, and Tilmon are probably going to lead the way, but the opportunity is there for Watson to become a big time factor as early as next year.
So, how can we possibly be better? Your two freshmen wings forecast just like some of the best players Mizzou has had in the last 20 years.
