A highly competitive program wouldn't be able to have players of that caliber being some of the first off the bench.
This era aligns with the late 1990's period for MU of guys like Jason Sutherland, Kelly Thames, and Derrick Grimm. Those players are remembered fondly, but you would always be pretty non-competitive with guys like that as the face of your program. Geist/Puryear/Vanleer are the poor mans version of those players. Geist and Puryear were not key components to an NCAA tourney team last year, they were weaknesses we were able to mitigate and work around (although they also cost us a good number of wins as well). If either one of those guys is in your top 8 rotation, its going to be extremely unlikely you will be of the caliber to compete for a conference championship.
I'm not questioning their effort. But I disagree with the notion they are some kind of building blocks or establishment of culture.
