Modern medicine can keep people alive that would have died 50 years ago.

I had surgery 10 years ago at a hospital in Minnesota associated with the Mayo clinic. I saw several younger people in wheel chairs with their poor families who had obviously suffered severe brain damage. The poor kids couldn't even hold their heads up. They were going to be life time burdens on their poor parents. Caring for what is basically a non-verbal, drooling quadrapligic with the brain function of a three month old.

I personally doubt whether the kids even wanted to be alive. Why would they want to be such a severe burden on their families for the next 30 years.

My point is, I think modern medicine sometimes keeps people "alive" that probably should have been allowed to die. I don't think we are doing them any favors by keeping them alive.

So if a baby is so severely deformed that they basically will never develop, I don't have a big problem with letting them die. Do you really think they (the baby) wants to be such a burden on their mother?
