I'm not sure how solidifying an increasingly small base is a winning strategy. Yes, there are a certain amount of nutjobs who will vote for Trump (even if he's in prison) but that won't be enough votes if he makes it to 2020.

It would be smart to alienate his base a little (who else are they going to vote for anyway) and appeal to independents with more moderate positions.
