SEC teams lost in the non-conference to these teams (among others): Northeastern, UCF, Georgia State (2X), OKST (normally good - bad this year), Western Kentucky, Butler (2X - also a good program that is bad this year), Stony Brook, Wofford, Providence, Wyoming, Cal Irvine, Texas Southern, and Kent State.
So does Stony Brook have sec caliber players? They beat a team that is 8-4 in the conference.
I do not get this sec-caliber thing. The league has two very good teams and 12 so-so teams some worse than others but any team in the bottom 12 is a threat to any other teams (including Mizzou). We may not have Kentucky and Tennessee caliber players right now but we certainly have "sec-caliber" players (whatever that is) from Geist all the way to Puryear, Reed et al.
We haven't won (for a lot a reasons - athleticism probably not the main reason) but we've made almost every game competitive (only Auburn really blew us out). We have also had a horrible run of luck with injuries. With Tilmon in foul trouble a lot, I'd agree that our forwards are probably not up to the same standards as Mizzou teams of the past, and that hurts, but that's really the only spot we lag behind. Without the injury to JP, Santos and Mitchell Smith would not get near as much floor time. We have decent guards, our senior guard is half a step slow but still more than capable of playing at this level, Smith is very good, but our freshmen guards are young and mistake prone. The turnovers more than anything kill this team and that's a function of youth and coaching.
I just don't think the sec is all that great this year. To say we don't have sec caliber players is not true. We did better than many sec teams in the non conference (certainly no embarrassing losses) and have been competitive in nearly all conference games. Injuries, TO's and lack of depth are the biggest issues we have.
