they had a relatively small NOLCF. The 100% write-off implemented by the gop is certainly one big reason that Amazon would pay no 2018 US income tax.
Research credits carried forward would reduce the US liability, as would parking their intangibles in Ireland or some other tax haven (that's the big fix that should have been included in any major tax legislation.)
