1. Watch for a nice bump in our RPI ranking today, maybe even a significant one. Not so much just because we won, which improves our winning percentage slightly, but because we now take on Miss States record and opponents records into our calculation. We were at 33 on Monday, and 32 yesterday morning. Look for it to land somewhere in the 20s, maybe mid 20s even.
2. Combined with the win over TAMU, we now have one significant signature win and one huge one on our NCAA tournament resume, where a week ago we had none. This win will be huge for our seeding chances, as long as we don’t turn around and kick it away in the next 3 games, all tough ones, Tennessee at home, Auburn and Arkansas on the road. If we go 2-1 in those games and then beat Bama at home in the regular season finale, we will be in great shape to be in the 5-6 seed range, which is critical. If we run the table, we will have at least a shot at a 4 seed and home regional, which has been off the table for a long time this year. If we beat Tennessee Sunday, I think ESPN will have us as a solid 5 seed come Monday.
3. We drove a dagger into Miss States chances for a 1 seed. They were the lowest 1 seed in Monday’s ESPN bracketology, barely beating out UConn, and Charlie Creme has already dropped them to a 2 seed after last night. They could run the table, and win the SEC tournament, and get the 1 seed back from UConn, but they will have to start by beating SC on the road in the last regular season game.
4. Someone asked, best win in Mizzou WBB history? Got to be up there in the top 2-3 at least. We have taken down highly ranked teams at home before in the last 4 years, but being on the road, against a top 5 team, magnifies this one considerably. In 2015 we took down #12 TAMU on the road when Maddie Stock drained at 3 at the buzzer. This was better than that. And in 2001, in the NCAA tournament, we were a 10 seed and beat Georgia, a 2 seed and top 10 team, in Athens. We also beat Tennessee on the road this year when they were ranked #10, but of course UT has been exposed since then. Miss State will be a top 6-7 team at least at the end of the season. So yeah, this is probably the best ever.
5. It is always fun watching the playground bully get punched back in the nose and seeing the disbelief on their face. That’s what happened last night. Miss St isn’t used to teams matching their toughness and hanging around, and it seemed to rattle their players. Their coach, in the mic’ed up segments, had a mixture of concern and fear in his voice, he knew he was in trouble.
6. I’ve been saying this was a certain loss for weeks, and more than glad to be proved wrong. Although I didn’t see any other Mizzou fans here disagreeing with me and betting their house or firstborn on a Mizzou win :) Toughness and composure won this game for us, and it’s a little frustrating to look back on the winnable games we lost earlier, particularly Florida, where our composure fell apart late. Consistency has been a big problem all year, but I’m hoping the sky high confidence the kids have now will translate to a strong finish. It all starts on Sunday against a talented and dangerous UT team bent on revenge.
