How capitalism works and why self preservation works for

As an undergraduate at Virginia Tech my marketing professor asked why someone would start a business.

One idiot said, "To provide needed goods and services to the community."
The next idiot said, "To provide employment opportunities to people in the community."

Those answers never occurred to me.

Those are things that happen when a successful business is launched but it is not the REASON that someone took three mortgages on his home, borrowed from his parents, grandparents, siblings, friends and anyone who would "contribute."

The professor just rolled his eyes and said people start businesses to get rich.

I would submit that AFTER bill gates got rich he could start his charities and compassionate initiatives. If he had begun his business by giving products away and asking for donations so he could help people, he would be out of business and the people he is able to help today would not be the beneficiaries of his largess.
