Kentucky was in a similar situation when they dabbled between Tubby post title and Billy Gillespie. Then they got Cal. Granted it wasn't as long of draught but the statement that IU can't be elite anymore is just not true. Are fans expectations inflated? Sure. People live and breathe basketball at IU. It's no different than football in the south. But Crean is nothing more than a mediocre coach that recruits above average and every once in a while nabs a star.
He had plenty of talent on this team in 2016-2017 and 2013-2014 and couldn't make the tourney. 2 McD All americans on the 2013 team and 2 NBA guys on the 2016 team. He's decent but don't give him that much credit and say Indiana unfairly got rid of him because of expectations. He had 9 years and never got past a sweet 16 despite easily the best team in the tourney in 2012 with Zeller, Oladipo, Yogi Ferrell, Hulls and Watford.
