There was a spy/traitor in an American prison barracks in Germany in World War II. A prisoner who was not the traitor, was accused and severely beaten by most of the prisoners in his barracks.
He was talking to his commander later, and said that the real trailer was hitting just a little bit harder and just a little more often than everyone else.
Competitive virtue signaling. They must hit harder and just a little more often than everyone else, to prove their high moral standards.
