Socialism is an economic system. Under socialism the means of production are controlled by the state (i.e. all productive enterprises are owned and operated by the Staste). The state determines what and how much to produce. It is a command economy.
Individuals have virtually no property rights and their economic choices are limited by the fact they own few, if any productive assets and the state determines how those assets are used, namely it decides what good and services are produced.
In Socialist systems there is a very substantial loss of freedom of choice in economic matters and this loss of economic freedom always leads to a loss of political freedom.
In other words, socialism is a totalitarian economic system that inevitably leads to a totalitarian political system.
