Apparently the Indians living in Missouri died off in droves from the first early contacts with diseases carried by white explorers, fur traders. Many villages were almost completely killed off. I have lived in Missouri for 60 years and didn't know that. This occurred in the very early 1800s before Missouri was opened up for settlement.
Also, remember the Hawaiian die off - approximately 90% of the native population of Hawaii died off in about 20 years from diseases carried by explorers/traders.
