Seriously they are Buzzffeed why wouldn’t they double down?

They are all about clicks and this story has generated more of those for them than they could ever have imagined.
It is not like they have any journalistic integrity to protect. When this finally blows up they have lost nothing but will be ahead several million page views they would never have had.
They could not care less about this story, all they are trying to do is is keep their brand leading every news story across America for as long as possible.
The ones who should really pay the piper here, but won’t, are the “legitimate ‘ news organizations who ran with this story while making zero effort to verify it first.
