I was smart and it seemed like the next procedural step in some process.
Started in the school of engineering solely because I had a 36 on the math ACT and that's what people told me to do. Hated everything about it, especially the other students.
Got a BS in math because I liked it and lucked out that a company called EDS values math degrees.
I planned nothing about my entire career or life.
Now, at 52, I plan around what I want to do and how I want to live. Finally.
