DAVIS, Calif. (KCRA) —
The man who authorities say ambushed and killed California police Officer Natalie Corona has been identified.
Kevin Douglas Limbaugh, 48, was identified Saturday as the shooting suspect by the Yolo County Sheriff’s Office deputy coroner.

Limbaugh ambushed Corona on Thursday night as she was responding to a three-vehicle crash on Fifth Street between C and D streets in downtown Davis, Davis Police Chief Darren Pytel said Friday. Witnesses reported that he stayed in the shadows as Corona processed the crash scene.
As Corona was helping drivers involved in the crash, Limbaugh rode up to the scene on a bicycle and then opened fire on the 22-year-old officer, authorities said.

Davis police spokesman Paul Doroshov said it remained unclear Saturday if Limbaugh planned to shoot Corona or if the shooting was a crime of opportunity.
Authorities also found a letter inside Limbaugh's home that was apparently written by him.

“When the investigators got into the house where the suspect was, they found a letter, open-face, on the bed. We can only speculate that it was there to be seen immediately," Doroshov said.
Limbaugh had previous contact with Davis police, but "he wasn’t on the radar as someone who was continuously calling in, expressing hate for us," Doroshov said.
Court documents obtained by KCRA 3 detail Limbaugh’s recent criminal history.
In September 2018, Limbaugh was charged with battery with serious injury, according to Yolo County Superior Court records. He was convicted a month later and became prohibited from owning a firearm.
“When it got to court, it was pled out to a misdemeanor. This is common. He had no criminal record,” Doroshov said.
He then became prohibited from owning a firearm.
which he previously surrendered. He had no records of owning any other firearms.

On Nov. 9, 2018, Limbaugh turned over a Bushmaster AR-15 semiautomatic rifle to the Davis Police Department, records show. That same document states that a review of the Automated Firearms System revealed no guns registered to Limbaugh.
Still, the man accused of killing Corona managed to get two semi-automatic handguns and multiple magazines of ammunition to carry out his attack. Detectives are working to figure out where the weapons came from
