who was still in college. Sears at Metcalf was out of stock, but they called Bannister and they were holding one for me.
I parked way the hell away from all the Xmas parking and headed into the Sears store. Crossing the outer drive, a carload of guys rolls up on me. "Uh oh". Back window rolls down..."Buy something fo' yo' lady?" and both the guys in the back seat have all kinds of gold chains hanging of their fingers. "It's not hot. It's not hot."
"Sorry, I don't have any CASH on me."
"Dat's cool."
They take off and I'm memorizing the plate number. Get to the store and dial 9-1-1 from a pay phone in the vestibule and give them the plate number. Go in, make my purchase, and head back to the car to see the area blanketed by KCPD cars.
Get home and call my wife to tell her what happened. Another dispatcher picks up and I tell him what happened. "You got the plate number?" Sure. He runs it and the registered owner is on probation for....wait for it....burglary.
