making tons of money, but I do reject the idea that college athletes should.
I think a college education is a very valuable thing. And, as seen as an aggregate, college sports provide education to student athletes that would otherwise not have (or perhaps deserve) that opportunity.
Something like 99% of college athletes do not play professionally. A percentage of those would never have been accepted without having athletics.
If you want to argue that FORCING HS athletes to go to college is a bad idea, then you would have a good point. But providing them ~$100k per year in tuition, food, books, lodging, and clothing is the same thing as compensation. As is the idea of 'breaking the cycle' of poor, uneducated [insert ethnicity].
