First of all, he didn't "quit on UCLA"... he won the Pac-12 his final year there and had a top incoming recruiting class. UCLA fired him because they thought they could do better, but they were wrong... Howland is still the last coach that was able to take them to a Final Four (and did so 3 consecutive seasons).

Howland has succeeded at every job he's had. Mississippi State is one of the toughest places to win in the country, and he has rebuilt the program into an SEC contender in just 3 seasons.
