toes directly at the basket. Only fairly recently did they get smart and realize that a modified dart throwing stance made more sense.

The feet are very important. Now, is there only one specific stance that can work? No. But they do need to be roughly shoulder width, shooting foot slightly forward, and slightly cocked to the side away from the shooting arm. Otherwise, the rest of the system can't be in alignment.
