No it was not just about Comey being awful at his job.

It was all the inappropriate meetings Trump had with Comey to what appeared to Comey that Trump was trying to get him to end the Russian investigation. When Trump realized Comey was not playing ball Trump fired Comey. Stupidly Trump went on a national broadcast interview with Lester Holt and specifically said he fired Comey "because of that Russiar thing."

Along with Comey's testimony and With all the supporting memos it is pretty damning evidence that Trump was trying to obstruct justice which directly ties to Russia.

Everything about James Comey would not necessarily tie him to being investigated by Mueller. If there is evidence Comey made material false claims in his testimony on Trump asking for loyalty, firing him, etc. then that is special counsel related. If you say he is lying about something else just because he is involved in the russia investigation does not mean he would be investigated by the special counsel. If Comey actually did break any laws not related to the special counsel investigation I would expect it to be referred to the approprate DOJ jurisdiction.
