The legal fiction is

PRESUMED INNOCENT IN THE EYES OF THE LAW.

An innocent person stays innocent, even when convicted.

A guilty person stays guilty even when acquitted.

Our legal system simply makes a value judgment regarding how we will treat those who are judged to be guilty or not guilty beyond a reasonable doubt, and treat them as if it is the truth, without regard to the actual truth of the matter.
