There is a good reason to have the second in command in the state located close to the rest of the government.
Should the governor be out of the country, incapacitated, someone would need to step in to stay executions, call out the national guard, sign legislation, etc.
It isn't an unreasonable requirement. It's a requirement he fully agreed to when elected.
The next person can live in Tarkio, Mo I guess, or maybe just shack up in downtown KC?
