ever saw them intoxicated. Ever.
My wife worked at one of the alternative high schools for a brief period a few years ago. The one common denominator among many of the students was pot smoking.
And in some instances, their parents were also a study in substance abuse. There were a few kids where THEY were the functional adult in the family and were going to school because they realized they really needed a diploma AND they were working a job to keep themselves and their siblings in housing because the parents weren't dependable.
One principal told a story of a kid destined for the alt high school because he kept acting out. Turned out the reason for his behavior was he was in dental pain. The District has an Education Foundation to fund those type of expenses and picked up his dental bills. Funds come from various donations and there are some very well connected business people who freely give to the Foundation. Sad that someone would fall through the cracks because their parents are more interested in getting high than taking care of their kids.
