K.J. Walton, already with the team's highest vertical, is jumping even higher
K.J. Walton worked on a lot of things while redshirting last season. The Missouri transfer tried to fine-tune his jump shot, defense and ball-handling. One area the coaching staff maybe wasn't expecting a huge jump was Walton's vertical leap, because it was already so high. But that's exactly what the redshirt junior guard did.
"It's almost hard to imagine knowing how well he jumps," Whitford said, "but he added 3 1/2 inches to his vertical in the offseason, which is ridiculous for anybody, much less someone who already had a 40-inch vertical."
Walton notched a 45-inch vertical leap in the team's fall test. For context, the highest vertical leap at the NBA Combine this year was 42 inches.
Persons is looking forward to playing alongside a player who can create his own shot. This should allow Persons to spot up a bit more and have the ball in his hands less.
"With K.J., he can create for me," Persons said. "That's something I haven't had here really from the guard position. He's so relentless going to the rim that it gets me open. It's actually, with me spacing out, it helps him too. It's a 1-2 balance that's pretty nice. I love playing with him, I love his motor. I love getting him going up and down because he can be a problem in this league and for a lot of teams that we play."
