There are now 5 Senators at play each of whom can easily walk away saying there were just too many questions about his character.

So yeah, if he wants the job there are people who need to be comfortable. AND add to that that IF he doesn't get the nod (I think it 50/50) then they don't fill the seat and the Midterms change the equation. The Fundamentalists Right got in McConnell's grlll, btb, and told him that failure to deliver Kav will result in a no-show by fundamentalists for the GOP. HEAT IS ON. And lil Jeff Flake whom Trump liked to dis on - holds a LOT of power right now.
