Preferred vs. non-preferred walk on

I don't know if the same applies to basketball, but in football at least there are different levels of walk ons.

Preferred walk ons can join the team earlier. Others have to wait until school starts.

Not sure if it's technically a rule or more a guideline teams follow based on roster size. I know football rosters are limited to 105 at certain points of the year. I assume basketball has a number, as well, but I can't find it. I wanna say it's 15, but I can't confirm. With all the scholarship players plus Braun and Suggs, we're at 15, which would mean Yerkes has to wait.
