I used to say that Terrence Phillips most close comparison historically at MU was Dibi Ray. That was viewed as outlandish, particularly in 2016-17 because he was for many games the best player on our team. If you are unfamiliar with Ray, from a production standpoint he avged 2.3 ppg and 2.6 assists for MU in 1997-98....but from a skill set and ability perspective he and Phillips are the same person which was hard for some fans to wrap their head around seeing the production Phillips was having and the role he was playing on an SEC team.
Then we started trying again, and even with our huge pg issues, Phillips had the production of Dibi Ray. Because that is what his actual ability is, he is not an SEC caliber player and never was. But you could put him on the court in SEC games and he wouldn't fail, that isn't how basketball works.
Hard to assess Hughes. He appeared to be entirely uncoached at MU and was basically just on the court doing whatever he wanted and giving varying levels of effort and commitment. He had some ability.
