New trend of house flipping mostly a flop in St. Louis
Joe Holleman
Joe Holleman is a reporter for the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.
Television shows about flipping old houses are all the rage these days.
But don't expect St. Louis to be starring any time soon.
In "Best Places to Flip Houses," the list lovers at personal finance website WalletHub ranked our fair burg as No. 147 — out of the largest 172 cities in the U.S.
The rankings took into account three categories:
In the area of "market potential" — which included gross return on investment, median purchase price, real-estate agents per capita, real estate taxes and percentage of foreclosed homes — we came in at a stellar No. 7.
But it all goes downhill from there.
When it comes to "renovation/remodeling costs," we clocked in at No. 158. That category focused on actual renovation costs and workers' salaries.
And in our now-familiar poor showing in the "quality of life" category (crime, school system, unemployment) St. Louis finished at No. 137.
Nearby major cities all came in ahead of us: Nashville (19), Springfield, Mo. (30), Memphis (72), Indianapolis (77), Louisville (78), Cincinnati (87), Kansas City (88) and Chicago (145).
The best city: Sioux Falls, S.D. The worst: Bridgeport, Conn.
