Overland Park Police Department news release.
Three officers have resigned from the Overland Park Police Department following a self-initiated internal investigation.
“In mid June the Overland Park Police Department became aware of potential issues regarding the issuance of tickets in connection with seat belt enforcement. Specifically, there was reason to believe that seatbelt violations were issued when drivers may have been violating other traffic ordinances, such as speeding, but were wearing seatbelts.
“The results of the investigation are a personnel matter; however, I can confirm that all involved officers resigned during the course of the investigation. More than 200 traffic tickets pending in the Overland Park Municipal Court were dismissed,” said Police Chief Frank Donchez Jr.
“We believe this is an isolated incident. We apologize to the community for the actions of a few. This Department prides itself on integrity and the public’s trust is a priority.”
