The BBC took a look at both U.S. and Russian interference in foreign elections for the 1945 - 2000 time period. It found that both repeatedly interfered repeatedly. If memory serves, the U.S. interfered in about 60 elections and the old U.S.S.R./Russia in 48.

Given the advances in information technology, etc., it is naive to think that foreign nations won't attempt to influence our elections. Bottom line: we do it, they do it and its going to continue. The system just needs to learn to deal with it.
