Personally, I think that had more to do with Romney not offering an alternative to Ohio, Pennsylvania, Michigan, Wisconsin and Iowa. Obama was the first President in a century to get re-elected after losing 4-5 states and 30 or so electoral votes to Romney... but Romney was still a free-trade guy that wasn't going to help the rust belt.
There is one fact about Obama that nobody can really argue with. His senate voting record made him the most liberal President elected in the history of the country. He wasn't even close to being a moderate and he didn't govern like a moderate either.
I think the left grossly misjudged the middle
