prior to 1986 (increased border enforcement), a large portion of Mexican migrants were men, leaving their families behind in Mexico, looking for temporary work. They would travel back to Mexico when there wasn't work, whether for economic reasons or simple seasonal jobs. The increased enforcement at the border made returning home to Mexico and being able to come back again more risky, so instead, they stayed in the US and/or brought their families with them.
