True, the MLS badly wanted STL & still do. They also pushed for a downtown location.
The ownership group was top notch.
The location selected was fantastic & would have worked or perhaps will work at some point perfectly, but if you weren’t going to even include STL County & St. Charles County for a tax imposed in the state of MO for a regional asset, then build it in the County where you would still draw fans/users from the region & it would have been a passed easily, imo.
The greatest % of the ticket holders would have been from STL County anyway. Maryland Heights isn’t “way” out West. If Metro East people would have supported & benefitted from it, they should help pay for it too. It would have been more spread out & hardly any tax burden as such to boot. Would have been a slam dunk.
Ultimately, I think the Metro East should be included in a vote to be taxed for it too. Same with the Zoo Museum District Tax. Wouldn’t have had really any problem with a MLS Stadium being put in, say, Madison County. Put it right in Lebanon - wait that’s in St. Clair County, isn’t it.
Just don’t mess with Edwardsville. SIUE’s gonna be D1 powerhouse. That place is growing by leaps & bounds. It has one of the largest campuses in the US by land area.
