The Tigerboard Archipelago
Seven Days in the Hole
Well, that was refreshing. Who knew that sharing a post about Duke University's and Joe Van Gogh's responses to an obscene and disgusting rap song (Get Paid, Young N-word, Get Paid) being played at an on-campus coffee bar wouldn't be a suitable topic of discussion on a political discussion board?

To recap, I included the lyrics in my post because they were unsuitable for the venue. It contains the N-word over 26 times. It refers to gun violence. It refers to selling drugs. It refers to women as "b*tches" and objects to "f*ck". In other words, it has all the trappings for a hiphop hit song. This is why I no longer watch the Grammys. Enjoy the full benefit of the lyrics here:

The fact a Vice President of Student Affairs spoke out directly to the baristas at Joe Van Gogh speaks volumes about how the song was incorrect for that venue. His Director of Dining Services made a follow up call to the owner of the Joe Van Gogh franchise resulting in the two baristas being summarily fired...and a campus protest from students regarding free speech and the First Amendment.
These snowflakes need to grow up. Just because Young Dolph has the First Amendment right to make such a work of art hardly means anyone has the right to play it in a public common area. Just because the Olde Un has the right to show porn movies doesn't give them the right to put them up on the side of their building on an 80" flat screen.
Of course, to speak out against playing this piece of artistry makes the VP a bigoted racist who doesn't understand the nuances of such music. That is always the fallback position of those who defend rap music. Other people just don't understand how "edgy" hiphop is. The Duke VP had to go on the defensive because of attacks claiming he was anti-First Amendment. Many apologies were issued all the way around because he never meant for them to get fired.
A few years back while I attended the Oklahoma-Mizzou Big 12 Championship game at Arrowhead, they played Soulja Boy's "Crank Dat" over the stadium sound system during a lull in the on-field action (probably while trying to get that stupid Sooner Schooner back on its wheels). While the song played, the stadium camera system panned the crowd and I saw various people putting their arms out while they were pretend flying.
Apparently the folks running the stadium sound system were unaware (or just didn't care) of the meaning of the song's lyrics "Superman dat hoe". I was very aware, however, because that song was played by a DJ at an elementary school aged Girl Scout Father/Daughter dance I attended a few years before and I was somewhat aware then of its inappropriateness for the event. Once I googled the song and learned the Urban Dictionary meaning to "Superman dat hoe", I was furious that song had been in the DJ's play list.
So the Big 12 office got an e-mail Monday morning following the Championship game complete with web links to the meaning to "Superman dat hoe". For those unaware, or too lazy to google it, it means to jack off on a sleeping girl's back and then blot up the semen with the bed sheet so that when she wakes up in the morning, the sheet is stuck to her back like a cape. Within hours I had a profound apology from the league office who had no idea how offensive "Crank Dat" is. So much for trying to mainstream hiphop.
I certainly have to applaud the Duke VP of Student Affairs for calling the two baristas out for their music selection. Why does society have to put up with this "edgy" art form? Why do people have to acquiesce to music filled with profanity, promoting gun violence, and which is misogynistic, especially in a public common area?
I have had mods pull posts before. I have been suspended before. I have always had decent enough relationships with mods to joke about a post getting pulled or a few hours off. MarcTiger, after pulling a night Shack post of a young lady laying on a piano bench, TBIM'd to say he was sorry to pull the post because it was most definitely one fine derriere. I reposted it with a resized Mizzou flag covering her butt and got a chuckle out of him. Apparently this mod thought my post was "bullsh*t". Was that his personal political viewpoint? How does he feel about rap music? What made it "bullsh*t"? Apparently the posted lyrics were offensive enough for Tigerboard (even though Nick's filter removed the profanity) and you would think they would be too offensive for an on-campus venue.
I don't understand how posting about an incident which led to a campus protest (God knows we need more of those, right?) at a University office warrants the post getting pulled. Sorry if including the lyrics offended any of you, but if they were offensive here wouldn't they be offensive being played at a coffee bar in Brady Commons?
As a follow up, Young Dolph invited both baristas to a concert in Florida where he called them on stage to hand them $20,000. Both apparently got their jobs back and Joe Van Gogh decided to pull out of its campus location. Good. They can be off-campus in a private location and feel free to play whatever edgy music they want.

I hope the IRS comes calling. Those two need to feed the machine responsible for their utopian society.
You know the real irony? Young Dolph isn't getting paid when the baristas at Joe Van Gogh played his rap. Where are his royalties? I find that funny.

Answer me this, why are the people who would protest this as a First Amendment issue the same people who would show up to protest against a conservative speaker invited to campus? But then again, aren't the liberals always the only ones whose viewpoints matter? Just like all things liberals support, we should just suck it up and tune it out if we don't like it. Illegal immigration? Ignore it. Homeless people living in tent cities and crapping on sidewalks? Ignore it. Funny, no one can invite a conservative speaker to a campus event and have the liberals ignore it.
