There are alternatives to playing basketball in the NCAA. Just because you cannot negotiate a contract to play in the NCAA - something that may or may not be true given the sneaker companies' college payroll - doesn't mean you are FORCED to play in the NCAA.

You can play professionally overseas if you wish. You can decide to go to college and train on your own without playing competitively and without subjecting yourself to the demands of a college coach.

The long and the short of it is this: if the top notch athletes opt out of the system, then other athletes will replace them. The basketball players, as a whole, are irreplaceable. As individuals, they are not. Same thing with the coaches.

And if anyone wants to step up and become the head of a media company like Time Warner, they're free to go ahead and try.
