extent. Obama had been a relative unknown, a community organizer who came out of nowhere, was a state senator for 7 years, then a single term as a senator from Illinois.
Trump was constantly in the news headlines, on TV & radio shows and was a household name for decades. Everyone knew him as "The Donald".
Fwiw, I wasn't impressed with him, especially as a candidate, but you can't underestimate the power of the publicity and name recognition. I've heard it said that even bad publicity can be good publicity & to an extent that is probably true. I was amazed to hear that politicians used to wait in line all night, or longer so that they could be first on the ballot because that made a significant difference in the number of votes that they would get. That's nuts as far as I'm concerned, but people are stupid... or at least a lot of people are.
Bottom line, I think Trump had a major advantage out of the gate vs a relative unknown candidate.
