We had some coaches who turned out to be pretty great -
In 1999:
John Calipari had coached 8 seasons for UMASS and 3 in the NBA;
Bill Self had coached 4 seasons at Oral Roberts and 2 at Tulsa;
Larry Drew had been an assistant for the Lakers for 7 years in the NBA
Quin Snyder had been an assistant in the NBA for a couple years and at Duke for 6 seasons
Kim Anderson had been an assistant at Missouri for 11 seasons.
If you look at the records of everyone IN 1999, John Calipari was clearly the most experienced/"best" at the time. After that, Bill Self's record was pretty similar to Mike Anderson's (two additional seasons) or Frank Haith's (Haith had one additional head coaching season, and in the ACC under his belt).
And as it turns out each have had success in some place - you never know how things would have turned out had Mizzou hired Self - he could have gone from MU to KU rather than jumping from Illinois; Calipari would most likely have left or gotten MU into some serious NCAA mud; etc.
Things only seem bad because Self has had some success at KU over a long period of time.
